11 days and counting…

I will be leaving for South Africa in 11 days, so I figured I should start up this blog.  Today was my last day at the Southern Poverty Law Center, and I’m going to miss it VERY much!  It has truly been a blessing to work at such an amazing place.

I have learned so much here in Montgomery, AL.  Not only have I gained truly valuable experiences working for an organization that does such important civil rights work, but I have also learned a lot about myself – I think being on your own kind of does that to you.  I have learned that even though I may not know exactly where my path is going to lead, it is laid out for me, and all I have to do to find it is continue to seek my true purpose.  I love this quote from The Alchemist, which my wonderful roomie lent me: “No matter what he does, every person on earth plays a central role in the history of the world. And normally he doesn’t know it.”  Living in the city that birthed the Civil Rights Movement has renewed my sense of purpose and has inspired me to rededicate myself to the ideals of justice and equality, for which so many people died.  I have no doubts that this next stage, my semester in South Africa, will open my eyes to a whole new way of looking at the world, and will bring me closer to that ultimate discovery of how I will end up impacting my community and society as a whole.
